As a Muslim, our health is our greatest wealth. Many times our health is something we take for granted every day. It is not until we are sick or are diagnosed with a disease, that we realize what a blessing health is. Rather than taking our health as granted, we should be expressing our gratefulness to Allah for granting us with such a blessing.
Our bodies are a vessel, a gift from God, and we will be questioned on the day of judgement, and held accountable on how we took care of our bodies in this world. In order to preserve and maintain one’s body and health, it can truly only be achieved by taking care of one’s health. Healthy living is an intricate part of Islam. There are various examples that can be adapted in one’s life that will aid in their health and wellbeing.
Salah is mandatory 5 times a day for Muslim. Not only is this benefiting us spiritually, this provides us with physical movement and mental concentration. Our blood is circulated, our muscles and joints are in an active state which subsequently, keeps our bodies in an active state.
Prior to performing Salah, we also must make ablution or wudu and clean our bodies. This is also carried out 5 times a day, leaving the body and mind clean, refreshed and ready to pray. This action will keep us in a constant habit of washing our hands, using the restrooms properly, and maintaining healthy hygiene. It was reported that the prophet Muhammad (saw) said,
“Purity is half of iman (faith).” [Abu Malik Al-Ash`ari]
Diet, Nutrition & Exercise
These three components are necessary for being a healthy muslim. Putting the right nutrients and minerals into one’s body reduces the likelihood of early onset of chronic diseases. Exercising daily or on a regular basis, keeps the body active and fit.Excessive eating or overindulging, can cause sick feelings and can potentially lead to risks of Diabetes or heart disease. Indulging in sweets and unhealthy things are acceptable occasionally but not on a daily basis.
O ye who believe! make not unlawful the good things which Allah hath made lawful for you, but commit no excess: for Allah loveth not those given to excess. [Surat Al-Ma’idah, 5:87]
Staying away from haram foods, such as Pork, which is high in cholesterol, salt and other unclean attributes, will keep the body in healthy state. Eating diets that are natural, organic, and whole also prevent us from consuming unnecessary chemicals, like artificial flavorings and preservatives, which could be detrimental to our health in the long run.
“O Mankind: Eat of what is lawful and good on earth” [Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:168]
Maintaining the balanced diet, eating foods rich in nutrients, fibers, protein and healthy carbs, exercising on a regular basis, and staying away from haram foods and overeating, will all result in a healthy lifestyle and a healthy body allowing us to worship Allah how He instructs in shaa allah. The prophet (saw) was also known to have said,
“A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak one, and both are good. Keenly pursue what benefits you, seek help only from Allah, and do not give up. If something befalls you, do not say, ‘If only I had done otherwise,’ but rather say, ‘Allah so determined and did as He willed,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to Satan’s work.” [Al-Bukhari]
By incorporating salah as well as being mindful of our eating habits and physical activity will ensure that we will be able to maintain a healthier and happier lifestyle. On a daily basis, saying thank you to God for the body and health you have been blessed with will also result in Him showering more blessings on you. Always remember to say thanks and never to take for granted what you are given, it may very well disappear in a blink of an eye.
“Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth, before you become old; and your health, before you fall sick; and your richness, before you become poor; and your free time before you become busy; and your life, before your death.” Prophet Muhammad [Bukhari]
